ABSTRACT
This study reviews autotransfusion a safe, easy, economical and highly effective procedure which practically eliminates the risks that may be the result of a blood transfusion and alloimmunization. Being a frequently used tool for the plastic surgeon, it is very interesting to deive in the topic and know of its utility in other areas, as well as the controversies that turn-up in the use of the procedure in specific groups like seropositive patients, Jehova’s Witnesses, etc. Also mentioned are the advances in technological development that perhaps in the near future will allow blood to be replaced with synthetic solutions and then this topic will be part of medical history.
