ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the lung inflammatory response through histopathology and lung wetweight determinations in diabetic rabbits subjected to a challenge with
Klebsiella pneumoniae lipopolysacharide (LPS). Two groups were included. Both groups received a transthoracic challenge with LPS directly into their right lungs. The left non-inoculated lungs were used as controls. Animals in Group 1 received the diabetogenic agent alloxan 110 days previously, whereas controls (Group 2) received saline solution. Five days after the challenge rabbits were euthanized. Histopathological examinations were similar in both groups however, lung wet weights showed that diabetic animals had a decreased lung inflammatory response compared to the control ones. These results agree with reports of deficiencies in the inflarnmatory response and repair mechanisms in diabetics.
