ABSTRACT
Sudden hypoacusia (SH) is a disease described fifty years ago or more; however, it has been impossible to clear out the etiological factors or pathophysiology, therefore, therapeutic guidelines have not been established, and both research for medic alternatives for the treatment and the investigation to determine the etiology go on. As to the cause of SH, four theories exist: viral, vascular insufficiency, intracochlear membranes disruption, and mediated by immune complexes. Regarding treatment, at Hospital Central Militar we have experience mananging these patients with hyperbaric oxygen (HBO), as additional intervention to pharmacotherapy.
