Relationship between body mass index and quality of life related to health in a Family Medicine Clinic

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the frequency of obesity in the different groups and to evaluate its relation with quality of life related to health. Methodology: Descriptive, cross-sectional study of 812 patients attending the Family Medicine Unit Dr. Ignacio Chávez of the ISSSTE. Obesity was diagnosed and classified based on the WHO criteria. The Profile of Health Questionnaire was applied to all subjects. Results: Thirty three percent of the patients were obese by WHO criteria; 7.3% had second and 2.3% had third degree obesity. Only 25% of the subjects had a normal body mass index (BMI). BMI correlated significantly with energy perception, pain and mobility. Conclusions: As expected, obesity is extremely prevalent in this otherwise healthy population and it’s degree certainly correlates with quality of life.
