ABSTRACT
Introduction: Bartonella henselae is the causative agent of cat scratch disease. One of its multiple presentations is neuroretinitis of Leber. Unilateral affection with optic neuritis and exudative macular changes (macular star) are the most common findings.
Case report: We present a case of a 7-year-old female patient with sudden vision loss and massive exudation (macular star) in both eyes with a complete recovery in 1 and a half months. Erythromycin plus deflazacort treatment was given for a 6 week period.
Conclusions: This case represents an uncommon variant of neuroretinitis in cat scratch disease. It is a diagnostic challenge within various entities such as Lyme disease and tuberculosis among others.
