ABSTRACT
Objective: To know systemic and ophthalmologic conditions that displays the patients with diabetes at the time of the first consultation in an ophthalmologic center of reference.
Material and methods: Observational and prospective study including patients of first time with diabetes mellitus type 2. Glucose levels, glycosylated hemoglobin, lipoprotein profile, microalbuminury, systemic arterial tension and complete ophthalmologic exploration was made in all patients.
Results: On 70 patients, glycemia average was 166.9 mg/dl, glycosylated hemoglobin average was 8.8% and microalbuminuria was found in 25 patients (35.7%). Hypercholesterolemia and hipertrigliceridemia was found in 44.3% and 40% of patients respectively. HDL cholesterol levels were 40 mg/dl or less in 84.3% of the patients. 51.4% of the patients affirmed to be hypertensive. Of them, 75% presented uncontrolled numbers of arterial tension. Of 140 eyes, 98 (70%) displayed diabetic retinopathy of which 33 (33.6%) correspond to nonproliferative retinopathy, 59 (60.2%) to proliferative retinopathy and 6 (6.1%) to inactivate photocoagulated retinopathy.
Conclusions: The studied population emphasizes the systemic factors of risk in the development and evolution of diabetic retinopathy. The results show the importance in the detection of these factors by ophthalmologist.
