ABSTRACT
Purpose: To evaluate the best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) and refractive error in keratoconic eyes that had intracorneal ring segment (Intacs) implantation.
Methods: This retrospective study comprised 114 eyes operated on between December 2004 and July 2007. Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), BSCVA, cyclopegic refraction and keratometry (K) were assessed preoperatively and at 3, 6, 12 and 18 weeks.
Results: Mean preoperative BSCVA was 20/80 and at 18 weeks 20/35. Final BSCVA was distributed as follows: 4.39% 20/20, 14.04% 20/25, 42.98% 20/30, 27.19% 20/40 and 11.40% worse than 20/40. Mean initial spherical equivalent (SE) was -13.37D and -8.03D at 18 weeks. Mean basal K was 53.23 D and 47.84D at week 18. There were 5 complications: extrusion, vascularization, contact lens (CL) intolerance and abscess formation. All were resolved satisfactorily.
Conclusions: Intacs implantation improved BSCVA in the majority of patients, being 20/30 the most frequent BSCVA. There was improvement of an average of 5D in the SE and 5.38D in K, comparing to the preoperative values. It was a safe method that was associated with a complication rate of 4.38%.
