ABSTRACT
Purpose: To determine cumulative incidence and severity of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), in premature infants younger than 32 weeks and a birth weight less than 1500 g, with an exposure to supplemental oxygen higher than 21% for more than 72 hours
Methods: A cohort of newborns was studied, with a gestational age equal or lesser than 32 weeks, a birth weight ≤1500 g, with a history of exposure to supplemental oxygen. There were examined with indirect ophthalmoscope, at the fourth and sixth weeks of life, to determine the existence and stage of the disease, and those cases who needed were treated with cryotherapy.
Results: 30 newborns were founded. Of those 9 (30%) have ROP: four (13.3%) have ROPGI, one (3.3.%) ROPGII and four (13.3%) ROPGIII. Of the newborns with GI, three showed spontaneous regression and the other died. Patient with GII have spontaneous regression also. Of the cases with GIII, one died before treatment, other three received cryotherapy. An association with the weight, size, and number of days with exposure to supplemental oxygen were observed (p‹0.05).
Conclusions: ROP incidence was similar to that reported internationally, severity was superior to the reported in the literature ( 13.3 vs 5 to 10 %)
