Simplified Guide for Transfusion of Blood and Blood Components

ABSTRACT

Objective: our objective was to provide a visual guide for medical personnel that facilitates appropriate clinical decisions for transfusion of blood and its components.
Material and methods: we conducted a review and bibliographic analysis related with handling of blood components for transfusion therapy.
Results: the guide gathered blood component data related with various characteristics of blood such as volume, cell count, expiration dates, conservation temperature, clinical indications, dose, and observations, information that should be gathered for therapeutic use according to the effective norm in blood banks.
Conclusions: in clinical services, this guide will facilitate the following: a) practical identification of the main characteristics of blood components; b) proper handling of these components, and c) rational employment of blood and its com-po-nents in integral therapy of hospitalized and out-patients.
