ABSTRACT
The purpose of the third article in this series is to present some relevant aspects of two of the most important databases in Medicine: Index medicus and Science Citation Index (SCI): origin, journal selection, and indexing processes. To be able to explain the SCI’s characteristics, the distinction between citation and reference is established, and the calculation needed to obtain the impact factor used in citation analysis, is briefly explained. Some of the most serious criticisms against citation analysis are presented.
Whenever the need for specific medical information to try to answer a “well-formulated-clinical-question” with the best evidence available arises, knowing the characteristics of each of these indexes will help select the most appropriate one.
