ABSTRACT
We describe histological and histochemical findings of two cases diagnosed as salivary gland basal cell adenomas. Immunohistochemical studies with ki-67 marker were performed to establish tumor proliferative capacity, and other markers to myogenic differentiation. Case 1 was diagnosed as solid type basal cell adenoma, and case 2 as tubular type basal cell adenoma with isolated solid areas. This study confirm: a) these tumors were benign, b) there is coexistence of myoepithelial cells and salivary glands basal cell adenoma, c) tubular adenoma endoluminal cells secretory activity is due to mucosal material within tubular lumen, and d) coexistence of glycoproteins (PAS positive), acid-non sulfated glycosaminoglycans (basophilic orthochromatic with Toluidine blue at pH 3.8; Dane and Alcian Blue at pH 2.5 positive) and acid-sulfated glycosaminoglycans (metachromatic with Toluidine blue at pH 3.8 and positive with Alcian blue at pH 1.0). There must be carried out complementary studies to compare carbohydrates of the normal salivary glands, because subtle alterations in tumor cells glycosylation can influence their biological behavior.
