Estrus induction with prostaglandin F2α. Effect of the interval between the treatament and the onset of estrus on the conception rate in Holstein heifers

ABSTRACT
The objective of this study was to evaluate the response to a treatment with prostaglandin F2α. (PGF2α) for the induction of estrus in Holstein heifers. Rectal palpation was carried out every week on heifers that were at least 13 months old. Those heifers having a palpable
corpus luteum were treated with natural PGF2α (Dinoprost-Thrometamine). The experiment was repeated until 1290 heifers had been treated. All heifers were continuously observed for estrus detection after the treatment. The time of onset of estrus was registered: 95.2% (1228/1290) of the treated heifers showed estrus within 144 h after the injection of PGF2α. The average interval from the injection to the onset of estrus was 69.9 ± 0.15 h, with a 95% confidence interval that ranged from 69.6 to 70.2 h. Artificial insemination was done 11.8 ± 0.11 h after the onset of estrus, and a 65.2% conception resulted. There were no differences in the conception rates of heifers that had different intervals from treatment to estrus. It is concluded that PGF2α is effective for the induction of estrus in heifers, and that there is no relation between the duration of the interval from treatment to estrus and the fertility of the induced estrus.
