Urinary tract infections on patients with urinary catheters

ABSTRACT
The infection of the tract urinary associated to catheter (ITUAC) is different in the published cli-nics studies as well as the terms “urinary bacteria” and “infection of the urinary tract” (UTI) are frequently used indistinctly. Some specialists consi-der ITUAC a greater growth or equal 10
² UFC of a pathogen predominant, especially if it’s associated to piuria. All around the world there are millions of catheter applies in urinary tract with aim of control, reparation, diagnostic and treatment and this could be associated with the risk of infection from 1 to 2%, which increases from 3 to 7% by day. Different studies reveal that the bacteria most predominant is the E. coli, nevertheless, in a study carried out by Wazait et al. they found between 1996 to 2001 there were a significant change in the bacterial spectrum and in the antimicrobial resistance, so they observed greater infections incident. Once the catheter had been placed, even with a good hygiene, the entrance of bacteria can be postponed only temporarily, since eventually all the patient developed urinary bacteria, but is rare the infection on blood by this cause.
8 The hospital workers that have the responsibility of catheter’s care, need to have periodical training about techniques and complications by using these kind of catheters.
