ABSTRACT
Ambulatory surgery is defined as an elective procedure which does not require hospitalization and allows patient return home the same day.
Objective: To know about 10 years experience in a proctologic center of a hospital, as is the Coloproctology Unit of the Gastroenterology Service in the General Hospital of Mexico.
Material and methods: Surgical records of all patients whom underwent surgery from January 1993 to December 2002 were reviewed. Variables information included sex, age, diagnosis, surgery performed, anesthesia, medication and trans and postoperative complications.
Results: 1,402 patients fulfilled inclusion criteria, 689 (49.14%) were male and 713 (50.86%) were female, with a range of age between 7 and 80 years and media 32.
Conclusions: This procedure is very advantageous to the patient, the surgeon and the medical center, allowing the patient return home the same day and sooner to usual activities, as well as diminish costs.
