ABSTRACT
Background: Asymptomatic carriers of oral Candida have been reported in 17 to 75% of individuals. Identification of yeasts can be made by different methods. Chromogenic methods have been promoted recently.
Objective: To classify isolated Candida species with a chromogenic test (CHROMagar) in asymptomatic carriers. The study was conducted in mycology section of a general hospital in Mexico City.
Patients and methods: A descriptive and transversal study was practiced in a group of adults of both sexes attending the mycology service in a parallel protocol. [¿?]
Results: We studied 35 cases without clinical manifestations of oral candidiasis, 13 male (37.1%) and 22 female (62.8%), with an age range of 20 to 83 years. Eighteen (51.4%) cases were asymptomatic Candida carriers. Candida albicans was isolated in 8 (44.4%) individuals and Candida tropicalis in 4 (22.2%).
Conclusions: Frequency of oral
Candida carriers is high;
C. albicans was the most isolated species. Chromogenic methods allow an easy and quick identification of these yeasts.
