ABSTRACT
Objective
To evaluate effectiveness of Mitomicyn C in the prevention of scar tissue formation in the external auditory canal, in patients with congenital ear stenosis after canaloplasty, and thus to avoid a review surgery.
Methods
From November 1998 to August 2005, a prospective, longitudinal and descriptive study was carried out. This included patients with unilateral or bilateral congenital ear stenosis, who underwent canaloplasty. Seven of them had nine ears with recurrent postoperative granulation tissue after canaloplasty. Mitomicyn C (0.25 to 0.5 mg/ mL) was applied topically in the granulation tissue for 15 minutes, with intervals of a week between each application.
Results
The degree of granulation tissue previous to the application of the mitomicyn C was evaluated through a visual analogous scale. It was 100% in six ears (67%), 70% in one ear (11%), 50% in one ear (11%) and 30% in one ear (11%). Three months later, the degree of granulation tissue was 100% in four ears (45%), 50% in two ears (22%) and 0% in three ears (33%).
Conclusions
Mitomicyn C applied topically in congenital stenotic ears with recurrent granulation tissue after a canaloplasty reduces the granulation tissue permanently and avoids a subsequent surgical procedure.
