ABSTRACT
Background
Use of animal models in scientific research is essential to the study and development of the medicine. Animal models approach helps to reduce the indiscriminate slaughter of different species. Guinea pig is widely used in scientific research.
Objective
To propose the guinea pig like an ideal model for the production of experimental cerebral ischemia.
Material and methods
Ten male guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) of 350 g each one maintained under controlled conditions of biotery were used. For surgical procedure, animals were anesthetized with xylazine 5 mg/kg and ketamine 50 mg/kg. By means of a dissection to the height of the neck was identified the common carotid artery left and then it was tied with suture vicryl 4-0, interrupting blood flow ipsilaterally.
Results
This results support the proposal of using guinea pigs in studies of induced cerebral damage. The easy handling of guinea pigs, the recognition of anatomical structures, the maturity at the birth, simple surgical procedures and the first floor maintenance cost help to the exploitation of the pattern.
Conclusions
The growing incidence of cerebrovascular accidents due to the arterial hypertension demands many studies in this field supported by biomedical models.
