ABSTRACT
Background
National information of origin and follow-up of referral notes with the otorhynolaryngology service in the tertiary central care is scarce. Knowledge of quantity of referral notes a week or year, the diagnosis’ quick, and the identification of services interrelating with our specialty and the follow-up of these patients are determinant in the service planning.
Objective
To identify quality and quantity of the referral notes in the hospitalized patients in the tertiary central care in the otorhynolaryngology service of PEMEX.
Material and methods
A retrospective, descriptive and transversal study was performed at the Hospital Central Sur de Alta Especialidad, PEMEX. Data from hospitalary interconsultation of otorhynolaryngology service was obtained.
Results
At otorhynolaryngology service, physicians of other specialties sent 192 patients for interconsultation, who received 209 consultations: 92% in a period of 1 to 3 days; 71% in one day. Almost 50% of diseases attended by otorhynolaryngologists had a diagnosis different to that established before interconsultation.
Conclusions
Communication between otorhynolaryngologists and other specialists improves diagnostic approach and reduces costs and time in patient’s care.
