ABSTRACT
Neural tube defects (NTD) are a group of malformations resulting from abnormal closure of the neural tube owing to genetic and environmental factors interactions. The main NTD are cleft spine, which includes meningocele, myelomeningocele and anencephalia. The purpose of Epidemiologic Surveillance System of Neural Tube Defects is to unify criteria for their surveillance with timely and qualified management. Impact and importance of NTD is readily apparent in the high costs which include hospitalization, medication, etc. and in the other hand the emotional effect on patients and their families. These costs can not be met by most families nor by health services. All of this has a negative social and economic effect on the families. This review presents the current situation of the NTD surveillance. Proposals to implement preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic measures for NTD are recommended.
