Hepatic steatosis, steatohepatitis and hepatic lesion markers

ABSTRACT

Nonalcohlic fatty liver disease affects a large proportion of the population. Is a clinicopathological entity characterized by the development of histological changes in the liver that are nearly identical to those induced by excessive alcohol intake, but in the absence of intake of this. Obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes and oxidative stress have critical roles in the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Liver biopsy remains the most sensitive and specific means of providing important prognostic information.
