Approximately 500 million people, i.e. one fifth of the world population, are chronically infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV). Each year, over 1.5 million people die from HBV- and/or HCV-related chronic liver diseases, such as end-stage cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HCC is one of the most common cancers worldwide and in 2002, HBV and HCV have been responsible for at least half a million of these cancers.
