ABSTRACT
To evaluate anxiety and depression levels, and self-perceived quality of life, 296 patients (age range: 18-79 years old) attending a weight control clinic were assessed.
Methods: Beck depression scale, Hamilton anxiety scale, and a quality of life questionnaire were applied, and results were compared among gender and among surgical versus non-surgical patients. Scales were similarly compared to obtain correlation among these variables.
Results: Among gender, an statistically difference (p ‹ .05) was found in anxiety, depression, and some quality of life areas as well as among surgical versus non-surgical patients related to lack of satisfaction with self-image.
Conclusion: Obese patients present with significant anxiety and depression levels, and they express lack of satisfaction with their own weight and with their job environment. All these symptoms were more prevalent in women compared to men. Surgical patients dislike their self-image (i.e. cloth size and style, and image in general) compared to non-surgical patients. Like wise, an inverse relationship between depression level with physical well-being and body image satisfaction was found; and it was also found that the greatest the lack of satisfaction with their weight, the greatest the lack of satisfaction in areas related to «self» and to their environment.
