ABSTRACT
Objective: To compare the quality of life (QOL) of adults with and without diabetes.
Material and Methods: Comparative study, non-probabilistic sample, 50 people with type-2 diabetes (DM2) and 100 non-diabetics (NonDM2), ages between 45 and 65 years old; we used the EuroQOL D-5 questionnaire for quality of life and the Analogical Visual Scale (AVS) for self-evaluation of health. We applied a univaried analysis using Ji2 with the SPSS 10.0 program, significance ‹0.05.
Results: Sample age 54.21±5.64 years old, 59% female gender, 68% have a partner, educational level of 6.3+3.6 years, higher among the NonDM2 (p‹0.05), higher percentage of salaried employees among DM2 (p‹0.05). Personal health evaluation (AVS) was graded lower among the NonDM2 (69.8
vs. 73.9 p=0.00). Between 20 and 40% of both groups perceive problems in the five QOL dimensions, mainly in anxiety/depression.
Conclusions: There are educational, age and occupation differences (p‹0.05) but not in gender and marital status (p‹0.05). Quality of Life shows more problems in anxiety/depression, and people without diabetes evaluate their health more strictly.
