ABSTRACT
Acute kidney failure is an increasingly common problem and that carries potentially severe complications especially in hospitalized patients. Despite our understanding about epidemiology and physiopathology of acute kidney failure has improved, current strategies of prevention are inadequate and there are no other options of treatment besides renal replacement therapies (hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis). Part of this failure in treatment success and prognosis of this disease is due to lack of standardized diagnosis criteria and that we continue to rely on markers of glomerular filtration (creatinine and blood urea nitrogen) that are neither sensitive nor specific. Counting with a new terminology, diagnosis criteria, classification and ideal markers, would allow to a better identification of this problem and conduct new studies that could be translated in improvements in the management of patients with Acute Kidney Injury. This review summarizes and focuses in changes that have been produced in what we actually must know as Acute Kidney Injury.
