Heel reconstruction with free flap vascularization of wide latissimus dorsi

ABSTRACT
Within the multiple resources in reconstructive surgery, during the past years microsurgery has gained a special place for its great advances in reconstruction, not only providing cutaneous cover, but additionally by re-establishing aesthetics and function. In this article we review the literature from the first attempts to repair vascular injuries, performed by surgeon barbers in the XV century up to the advances of microscopic surgery, which has been beneficial in all areas of medicine, microsurgery has become a cornerstone in the area of reconstruction. We also present a case report where the rescue of a foot was achieved by using a myocutaneous free flap of latissimus dorsi, with good aesthetic and functional results.
