The evaluation of 120 patients from 1 to 16 years old by clinical and radiographic characteristics was done over the period from March 1994 to March 1998 with the diagnosis of tibial shaft fracture all treated at the Pediatric Orthopedics Departament in the Hospital of the University "Dr. José E. González". Only 72 of the patients (60%) met the criteria to be included in the study. The fractures were clasified as Simple, Displaced and Complex.
The objetives of the present study were:
To propose a new classification for tibial shaft fractures in children that may predict the outcome following these injuries; determine the influence of the age and pattern of the fractures on healing and complications and evaluate the efficacy of the conservative treatment with casts for this injuries.
