ABSTRACT
Introduction: Rhabdomyolysis is an infrequent pathology in the intensive care unit. Objective: To present a case of rhabdomyolysis and a review of literature.
Design: Case report.
Setting: ICU of a private hospital, Monterrey, Nuevo Leon; Mexico.
Patient: A 59-yrs-old woman with history of abdominal pain who received fenoverine during three days. Twenty four hours later she had muscular pain and generalized weakness. She was admitted to the ICU detecting acute renal failure.
Interventions: Intermitent hemodialysis (five procedures).
Results: During the ICU stay was found: high elevated concentration of creatinine (3-6.6 mg/dL), BUN (27-96 mg/dL, CPK-MB (1,531-10,080 UI/L) in blood, and a decrease of hemoglobine values (8.5 g/dL). A muscle biopsy was compatible with rhabdomyolysis.
Conclusions: Rhabdomyolysis due to fenoverine is rare and may be associated to acute renal failure.
