ABSTRACT
Introduction: Hematologic disorders and related ischemic stroke in young patients have been described.
Objective: To know the incidence of high levels plasma concentration of factor VIII (FVIII) in Mexican young patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease (ICD).
Design: Descriptive study.
Setting: Emergency Room Department (ERD) of a general hospital, Mexico City.
Patients: One hundred and two Mexican patients –56 women, (median age 39.5 years and 46 men (median age 32 years)– with history of ICD were enrolled.
Methods: A plasma sample was obtained of each patient and processed to obtain FVIII according conventional methods. Each patient was compared with a healthy control. A Student t test analysis was used to comparison of patients and controls.
Results: Plasma concentration level of FVIII in control group was 49-102 UI/dL (median 77 UI/dL); the values of FVII in all the patients of problem group were 53-168 UI/L (median 96 UI/dL); p = 0.045. Seventeen patients of the problem group have an increase of concentration level of FVIII: 124-168 U/dL (median 96 UI/dL). Only one healthy control had elevated concentration level of FVIII. A relation between age, gender and anatomic zone of lesion and level of FVIII was not found.
Conclusions: High plasma concentration of factor VIII may be a risk for ischemic cerebrovascular disease in Mexican young patients.
