ABSTRACT
Lyme disease is an infectious illness caused by the bite of Ixodes ticks infected with Borrelia burgdorferi. Seroprevalence in USA and Europe by ELISA test is 1 - 27%, depending on the geographic area. Only isolated cases are reported in Mexico. However, in Mexico City and northeastern Mexico a seroprevalence between 3- 6% was found.
Clinic manifestations are multiple, erithema migrans is the classic and first symptom, frequently found in the place where the tick bit: Weeks later, arthritis, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome can appear. In later stages we can find neurological and cardiovascular manifestations. Diagnosis is made through an ELISA test, and it must be confirmed by a Western Blot or CPR test, because Borrelia burgdorferi is hard to isolate in cultures.
