ABSTRACT
Background: Sticky platelet syndrome (SPS), described in 1983, is a clinical entity that supposes a disorder in platelet aggregation characterized by its abnormal increase in numbers and a trend towards the occurrence of arterial and venous vasoocclusive phenomena,. Its pathogenesis remains unknown; its existence can only be determined by platelet aggregation tests. The prevalence of the SPS is unknown, but there are data that suggest that it is frequent. Some authors have indicated that SPS is the cause of 20 % of the inexplicable arterial thrombosis and 13 % of venous thrombosis where it is not possible to identify the cause.
Objectives: To review available information about sticky platelet syndrome and its importance in Mexico.
Conclusions: SPS is the most frequent thrombophilic condition in Mexico; there are few reports of the detailed evaluation of Mexican patients, which makes it imperative to conduct rigorous clinical and laboratory studies to document the importance of this syndrome.
