ABSTRACT
Background: Peripheral venous insufficiency is a frequent chronic disease whose usual medical treatment has so far obtained poor results. However, during the last years several agents with therapeutic promises have emerged, particularly the combination of Ruscus aculeatus plus Hesperidine methyl chalcone and ascorbic acid. Objective: To observe the therapeutic effects of the combination of Ruscus aculeatus plus, Hesperidine methyl chalcone and ascorbic acid, in patients with chronic peripheral venous insufficiency.
Material and methods: An open clinical assay was carried on in a group of 80 patients with non complicated peripheral venous insufficiency. All the patients received the combination of Ruscus aculeatus plus Hesperidine methyl chalcone and ascorbic acid b.i.d. during a two months interval. The inclusion criteria consisted in the clinical diagnosis of the disease and being in the first three stages of the Hawaii Classification.
Results: The mean age of the group was 44 years (SD ± 9 years). Eighty two per cent of the patients were women and 93% of these women have had at least one pregnancy. Twenty seven of them received oral contraceptives. The clinical variables analysis (Wilcox) showed an evident improvement after the treatment (p = 0.001).
Conclusion: The combination of Ruscus aculeatus plus Hesperidine methyl chalcone and ascorbic acid seems to be an effective medical option for the non complicated peripheral venous disease.
