ABSTRACT
Mucormycosis is an opportunistic fungal infection, it affects decompensated diabetics, immunosupressed patients and occasionally healthy persons. Despite advances in anti-fungal therapy and surgical techniques the mortality remains high. A clinical-radiologic case of rhino-ocular mucormycosis, recorded in a diabetic woman is presented, the histopathology and the mycologic study of a Rhizopus spp strain isolated by culture of the necrotic facial tissue. The patient was treated with amphotericin B intravenous, total dose 2,800 mg, for 25 days, surgical debridement which included enucleation of the right eye end resection of paranasal sinuses. The diagnostic protocol and therapeutic management of mucormycosis was reviewed.
