ABSTRACT
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common congenital infection, occurring in up to 2.2% of all live births. The virus is known to infect many organs, including the liver, lung, brain, bone marrow and eye. Active CMV infection can cause notable morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients and destructive chorioretinitis, which is recognized by its distinctive appearance on ophthalmologic examination as white yellow areas of retinal necrosis with hemorrhages.
The finding of chorioretinitis has been associated with severe systemic infection, usually resulting in central nervous system impairment, permanent mental and motor retardation and sometimes death. We report an unusual case of chorioretinitis caused by cytomegalovirus in an infant without other evidence of severe cytomegalic inclusion disease. The diagnosis was established by culturing virus from throat and urine of both mother and child, showing a completely normal development in a three-year follow - up period
