ABSTRACT
Dermoscopy is a non-invasive diagnostic technique for the in vivo observation in dermatology, which enables the clinician to visualize features not discernible by the naked eye. Since it can be considered a method that links clinical dermatology and dermatopathology, skin tumours can be diagnosed with an accurate sensivity and specificity, especially in melanoma. The knowledge about the correlation between dermoscopy and histopathology is essential to understand and use this method. We must realize that dermoscopy opens up a new dimension in the clinical morphology of pigmented and vascularizated skin lesions, and it allows to improve the accuracy of dermatology diagnoses in vivo, but the diagnostic accuracy significantly depends on the experience of the examiners. Herein, this revision defines the dermoscopy criteria, and the histopathological structures underlying. Non melanocytic lesions and benign melanocytic tumours parameters are described as well.
