ABSTRACT
Purpose: The present work has the specific purpose to establish the frequency of any refractive error in healthy children from 6 to 12 years from the Hospital General de México.
Methods: Patients of the dermatology department were included, there age ranged between 6 and 12 years. Subjects with optical correction or any anatomical damage were excluded. All the study subjects underwent a complete ophthalmological examination with a refractive study with 1% cyclopentolate. Parameters like sex, age, type of refractive error and magnitude were measured.
Results: A total of 200 subjects were included. Emetropia was found in 20.5%, myopia in 8%, hyperopia in 22.5% and astigmatism in 53% of the studied population.
Conclusion: We can conclude that the refractive errors are common and frequently underdiagnosed in children unless severe sintomatology is present and possibly influenced by racial factors.
