Incidencia de Demodex folliculorum en blefaritis

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To determine the infestation incidence and index of D. folliculorum in patients with chronic blepharitis and compare it with healthy controls without ocular affection.
Methods: An observational, prospective, descriptive, transversal study was performed. 100 patients with chronic blepharitis and 100 patients of the control group were recruited. 16 lashes of every patient were epilated, 8 lashes were fixed with adhesive tape to a slide and 8 lashes were put into 10% formaldehyde, clearing them with cloral-lacto-fenol for the posterior examination under the optic microscope. The infestation index was obtained.
Results: Sixty three percent of the blepharitis group had D. folliculorum and the control group only had it in thirty three percent (p‹0.001). Adjusted by sex the woman had the acarus in 44.63% and the men in 53.85%.
Conclusion: The D. folliculorum plays an important role in the phisiopathology of chronic blepharitis.
