ABSTRACT
Ocular melanocytosis (nevus of Ota) is a congenital condition characterized by melanocytic hyper pigmentation of the episclera and uvea and it is generally accepted that it promotes an increased risk for choroidal melanoma, which is the most common primary intraocular malignant tumour in adults. Small cyst–like cavities within uveal malignant melanomas are very uncommon. These cavities may become large enough to be clinically detectable and have been described by most authors as tumour necrosis.
We report a case of 46 years old patient with a malignant uveal melanoma associated with a nevus of Ota in the right eye.
Prominent cavitations were detected with indirect ophthalmoscopy, A/B ultrasonography and fluorescein angiography.
Subsequent solid growth of tumour led to the correct diagnosis and a nucleation was done. Histopathologically large, non-necrotic mucoproteinaceous cavities were found within the tumour without necrosis or extra ocular dissemination.
After a three-year follow up the patient developed hepatic and splenic metastasis.
