ABSTRACT
Purpose: To evaluate the intraocular pressure in patients that underwent pars plana vitrectomy and silicone oil endotamponade.
Methods: We included 46 eyes after pars plana vitrectomy and silicone oil endotamponade (5000 centistokes). We analyzed the intraocular pressure at the preoperative day and also at the first day, the first and second week, and the first and third month after surgery.
Results: The intraocular pressure raised over the preoperative examinations in 43.5% of cases, 41.3% had at least one-time postoperative intraocular pressure measurements higher than 21 mmHg and 17.4% had intraocular pressure higher than 30 mmHg. The intraocular pressure was well controlled in 84.2% with antiglaucoma therapy, steroids and/or reopening of the inferior iridectomy. In 15.8% of cases the silicone oil was removed, causing in one patient ocular hypotony and severe loss of vision.
Conclusions: High intraocular pressure in eyes after pars plana vitrectomy and silicone oil endotamponade can be well controlled without the need of its removal.
