ABSTRACT

Temporomandibular joint ankylosis in infants results in a disfunction wich provokes during infancy functional, organic and facial problems. Treatment should be carried out by a team of specialists. An important aspect is the functional therapy 24 hours after surgery, in order to avoid re-ankylosis. Early opening, closing and lateral movements are mandatory. Sequelae should be corrected promptly. The object of this paper is to propose guidelines for postoperative rehabilitation on surgery patients with temporomandibular ankylosis by means of functional orthopedic appliances according to each patient´s characteristics.
