ABSTRACT
Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a benign vascularized tumor, locally invasive, originated in the sphenopalatine foramen. It presents in young males and represents 0.05 to 5% of all the head and neck tumors.
We present the experience at the Instituto Nacional de PediatrÍa in a ten year period dealing with this pathology. We included 21 male patients with a mean age of 11.9 years at presentation, According to Fisch staging, there were six patients in type I, nine patients in type II, five in type III and one in type IV. Preoperative selective embolization was done in 16 patients, and the mean intraoperative blood loss was 1611 mL; sublabial approach was used in 15 patients, transpalatine in two, endonasal in one and endoscopic in three. In six patients the tumor recurred and three had residual tumor after surgery.
