ABSTRACT
Analysis of crystals in the urinary sediment as well as calciuria and uricosuria can be usefulness in patients with urinary lithiasis, nevertheless, the degree of association is unknown among the number of calcium oxalate (CaOxC) and uric acid crystals (UAC) with the urinary pH (UpH), calciuria (CaU) and uricosuria (UU). The aim of this study was to establish a possible association between these. Fresh urine samples were analyzed: CaOxC and UAC were counted in a Kova chamber corroborating the composition with 10% NaOH and 10 % HCl; in addition we determined UpH, CaU and UU. There were included 372 samples, 140 of group I (healthy) and 232 of group II (with various clinical situation); 196 (52.7%) were men and 176 (47.3%) women; 30% had CaOxC and 5.3% UAC 2.6% had both types of crystals; there was difference between the averages of calciuria, uricosuria and pH (p ‹ 0.05), nevertheless there was no difference between the number of crystals when comparing both groups. Correlation Spearman test between CaOxC and UAC showed r
a = 0.56 (p ‹ 0.001); the relation between CaOxC and UpH it was 1%; there was no association between UAC with UU and UpH. In conclusion, one third of the CaOxC are explained by the UAC and its relation with UpH is low, UAC does not show association with UU and UpH.
