ABSTRACT
Purpose: To determine the frequency of dissociated vertical deviation (DVD) in patients who underwent surgery for congenital esotropia and to determinate the factors that influence it.
Material and methods: All records of the department of strabismus of the “Instituto de Oftalmología Fundación Conde de Valenciana” were reviewed. All patients with congenital esotropia and previous conventional horizontal surgery without DVD were included.
Results: 146 patients underwent surgery for congenital esotropia were included. 36 patients (23%) had DVD after the surgery. The average age at the time of surgical alignment was 10 years. 94% of the patients had a final alignment from 15 prism diopters to orthotropia. The presentation of DVD was more common before the first month (32%) and after the first year (36%) of the surgery.
Conclusion: There are two types of presentation of DVD after the surgical correction of congenital esotropia. One is the immediate type that probably corresponds to a previously existent DVD that was masquerade by the horizontal deviation. The late form could be more related to sensory disturbances.
