ABSTRACT
Orbital aeroceles are extremely rare entities developed as a consequence of orbital trauma or maxillary sinus surgery. It is theorised that an abnormal one-way valve between the affected sinus and orbital cavity allows chronic air trapping and subsequent aerocele formation. In the present paper we describe a case with the rare finding of orbital pneumocele manifested 7 months after otolaryngologic surgery with a clinical picture of unilateral proptosis and moderate pain exacerbated by sneezing.
The evaluation including x- ray radiographs, orbital Ultrasound and CT scan showed a well-circumscribed orbital aerocele in the right orbital cavity. The surgical procedure, pathological examination and differential diagnosis are discussed. The uniqueness of such lesion and its implications for ophthalmic and otolaryngologic surgery are emphasised.
