ABSTRACT
The dysthyroid orbitopathy can be associated with thyroid dysfunction, presenting several ophthalmologic alteration
mainly optic nerve compressions.
Objective: To correlate visual field abnormalities and clinical manifestation in patients with dysthyroid orbitopathy.
Material and methods: Visual fields blue-yellow and white/white were performed in patients with thyroid ophthalmopathy from May 2001 to May 2002. All patients underwent a complete ophthalmologic evaluation. Ophthalmologic alteration was quantified with Warner‘s classification. Visual field results and clinical sings were compared.
Results: 46 patients were evaluated. Age ranged from 18 to 58 years. Mean visual acuity for both eyes was 20/25. Braily test was positive in 10 patients. Predominant Warner’s classification degrees were 2 and 5. 63% presented alteration in white/white field and 78.3% in the blue/yellow field, 100% of these patients presented soft tissue alterations, proptosis, limited ocular motility in extreme ductions and normal optic nerve.
Conclusions Patients with moderate dysthyroid orbitopathy without clinical optic nerve lesion and normal intraocular pressure presented visual field abnormalities.
