ABSTRACT
Molluscum contagiosum is an inflammatory tumor caused by a poxvirus. Lesions located in the eyelid margin may cause an associated follicular conjunctivitis and frequently a superficial punctate keratitis. Often, the clinical aspect of the skin small umbilicated tumor lesion is sufficient to determine the diagnosis but electron microscopic observation is the only way for demonstrating the causal agent and up to now isolation of the viral stain has not been possible. The excision of skin nodules or cryotherapy thus cures the infection, since it prevents further reinfection by the skin virus.
We report the case of a 15 year-old boy who had right eyelid Molluscum contagiosum and follicular conjunctivitis treated with cry therapy and who developed a similar skin lesion on the left upper eyelid confirmed by histopathologic study which demonstrated the characteristic changes with typical intracytoplasmic viral inclusions.
