ABSTRACT
Purpose: To determine the incidence of the most frequent conjunctival micro-organisms in patients undergoing refractive surgery.
Methods: A prospective, descriptive, transversal and observational study was carried out between May 2006 and March 2007. Conjunctival cultures were obtained with a collection and transportation system (BBL Culture Swab, Becton Dickinson SPA), cytology was also obtained from healthy patients prior to the procedure.
Results: One hundred and seventy seven eyes from 89 patients were studied, 64 females and 25 males, with a mean age of 29.5 years. From these 32 presented positive colonization and 57 were negative, representing 35.9% and 64%. Thirty eight cases were reported as Gram-positive, from which the majority corresponded to
Staphylococcus epidermidis resistant to sulfonamides and tobramycine.
Conclusions: In accordance to previous reports from conjunctival flora there is a clear predominance of Gram positives, especially of
Staphylococcus epidermidis. The samples obtained could be compared with the later refractive surgery infections to set the basis of a prophylactic scheme of a determined population and establish a specific treatment in the case of an infectious keratitis.
