ABSTRACT
A case report of a 56 year-old female patient with a history of 4 months progressive proptosis of her left eye and decreased visual acuity is presented. Exploration revealed an afferent pupillary defect, normal eye movements and a 2 mm inferior displacement of the left eye. CT and US studies showed an intraconal occupying mass that caused displacement of structures. Excisional biopsy with lateral approach with an open orbital wall threw a firm ovoid mass of 24 mm diameter. Histopathologic study revealed a solitary fibrous tumor. The solitary fibrous tumor has a mesenchymal origin and it is exceptionally located in the orbit. The evolution is generally benign with the possibility of recurrence as well as malignant transformation if resection is incomplete. The presented case also offers a brief review of the literature.
