ABSTRACT
Introduction: Mikulicz disease is a benign disorder characterized by the presence of salivary and lachrymal gland hypertrophy. Causes of this condition include multiple diseases like Sjögren syndrome, although this is considered an uncommon association.
Case report: A 29-year-old male patient complained of enlargement of his superior eyelids and submandibular area for a 2-year period. Initially, diagnosis was of lymphoma-like disease, which was excluded based upon a biopsy specimen that showed a benign lymphoproliferative lesion that is present in Mikulicz disease. Keratitis sicca was documented in the patient but there was no clinical evidence of xerostomia.
Discussion: Although association between Mikulicz disease and Sjögren syndrome is unusual and controversial, it should be considered as a differential diagnosis in all infiltrative lesions that involve salivary and lachrymal glands.
