ABSTRACT
The oculocardiac reflex appears often in ocular procedures like the strabismus surgery. The vagal reaction includes a diminution in the basal cardiac frequency in 10% and a decrease of the arterial systolic pressure in 35 mmHg.Material and methods: The retrobulbar regional (subtenon) blockade avoids the oculocardiac reflex due to the inhibition of the afferent portion of this reflex. The incidence of the reflex was compared in two groups, one of patients submitted to ambulatory surgery of strabismus under general anesthesia (Group I), against a group of patients in whom in addition a regional blockade was applied (Group II).
Results: In the first group, 50% of the patients presented oculocardiac reflex. In the second, only 3.6% of them presented this complication.
Discussion: We concluded that the use of the regional blockade in patients who had strabismus surgery with general anesthesia is effective to avoid the ominous complication of the oculocardiac reflex. The importance of this reflex is greater in patients with cardiac, kidney and lung diseases.
