ABSTRACT
Objective: Our aim was to identify personality traits associated with Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) burnout scales in a group of Mexican professional nurses.
Design: We conducted an observational, descriptive, non-randomized, and cross-sectional study.
Materials and methods: The study was carried out between March, 2003 and September, 2004 in personnel of the Mexico City Infirmary who attended scientific events; all were candidates with no additional excluding criteria other than that of refusing to answer the MBI (Seisdedos Version). We studied sociodemographic variables including age, sex, marital status, and work shift.
Results: Our sample was made up of 551 female nurses (88.6%) who were 30.9 ± 3.8 years of age and 71 male nurses (11.4%) who were 19.8 ± 1.8 years of age. There were statistically significant differences in all subscales and in the global inventory related with age groups as well as with different relationship types between partners (No partner, Good, Indifferent, and Difficult Relationships) in female nurses according to marital status in the Depersonalization and Diminished Personal Fulfillment subscales, while for male nurses significant differences occurred in the Depersonalization subscale, as well as in the Depersonalization and Diminished Personal Fulfillment subscales among the different shifts analyzed.
Conclusions: In this study, male nurses showed a greater tendency to present burnout syndrome than female nurses.
